Credit Retrieval Courses
Offered during the regular school year and summer session

Credit Retrieval courses are for students who have already taken a particular course and not earned credit. A diagnostic assessment, given at the beginning of the course, will help indicate what standards the student has previously met, and what skills still need to be practiced and demonstrated. Based on the results of the diagnostic assessment, a Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP) for meeting standards will be developed by the teacher and then communicated to the student. Upon successful completion of the course, the student earns a passing grade (C) and .5 credit in the given course.

Overview:

Credit Retrieval courses have been designed to be completed within a 6-week session period. Students should plan on spending 90-120 minutes per school day (or approximately 45 total hours) to complete the course within six (6) weeks.

However, we realize that due to student skills, time-consuming regular school work, and other activities, some students may not be able to finish the course within the 6-week designed session. Although we encourage all students to formulate a plan to complete the course within six (6) weeks, we do allow students up to a maximum of twelve (12) weeks to complete the course.

Availability:

Enrollment opens September 2. Credit retrieval courses start every Monday starting with Monday, September 14. Students must have all required forms turned into the IA offices including verification of previously taking the course they want to retrieve. Full payment must also be made prior to the student starting the course.

Students starting Monday, March 2 or later will only have until May 21 to complete the requirements of the course. The last Monday to start will be April 5 which leaves the student 7 weeks to complete the requirements of the course.

Summer 2010: Students may sign up during our regular summer school enrollment window of June 1 through June 30. The 6-week summer school session will officially begin June 23 for early start or June 28 for the official start. The summer session will end end August 6.

Cost: Credit retrieval courses are offered for tuition of $195.00 per course. All tuition is non-refundable.

Q: Are time extensions offered in credit retrieval courses?
A: No. Students are given up to 12 weeks to complete the six-week session. If the student needs more than 12 weeks to complete the course, the student/parent will need to contact our office in order to make arrangements for the additional tuition fee required to continue in the course.
Q: As a parent how can I monitor my student's progress?
A: Parents may create a parent account which will give the parent access to reports such as the student's grades, log data, etc.In addition, the parent's login will provide Course Mail which the parent may use to communicate with their student and teacher regarding the student's progress. We highly encourage parents to check the student's online grades on a weekly basis for progress. Any concerns should be directed to the student's online teacher.
Q: Can I receive a refund if I withdraw from a credit retrieval course?
A: No. There are no refunds upon beginning the course. It is strongly recommended that students determine if the Internet Academy program's credit retrieval courses will fill their needs.
Q: Can partial credit be awarded in a credit retrieval course?
  A: No.
Q: Do students earn credit for completing a credit retrieval course?
A: Yes. Students will receive .5 credit for passing a high school semester course. A passing grade of C will be issued upon successful completion of the teacher generated learning plan.
Q: Do students earn credit for Internet Academy courses?
A: Credits are awarded for courses, but it is the student's responsibility to verify that their resident high school accepts IA credits towards graduation.
Q: How can I help my student be successful?
  A:

Learning online is a Student – Parent – Teacher partnership. Parent involvement increases student success. When parents stay involved in making schedules, familiarize themselves with course material, assignments and grading progress, and communicate with teachers, students have a high degree of success.

It is recommended that the parent setup an Insight parent account, provided by IA, that will give the parent access to reports such as grades, log data, and Course Mail to communicate with their student and assigned teacher.

Q: How do I submit my assignments?
A: Students are expected to use the submission tools within their online classes to submit all assignments. All communication between teacher and student should take place via the internal email system called Course Mail. Some assignments are designated to be mailed or delivered to IA, such as drawings or posters, or students may need to come into the computer lab via appointment for presentations or math exams.
Q: How is my progress evaluated?
A: Student's work will be evaluated against the standards for the course. Meeting standards ensures a passing grade in the course. A "C" grade will be recorded to show the student has met standard for all assigned tasks for the particular course. Student grades will be available automatically as soon as the teacher grades the work. Teachers are expected to have work corrected within 3 school days.
Q: How many hours do students devote to a credit retrieval course?
A: Typically a student should plan on 45 hours to complete the course during the 6-weeks session period. Some students may finish sooner, some may take longer to meet standards on all assigned tasks as defined by the Written Student Learning Plan.
Q: How many hours will a course require?
A: Students are expected to spend at least 90-120 minutes per weekday per course for the credit retrieval session. However, students have access to our system 24/7 so students may find it convenient to work on weekends and holidays.
Q: How many credit retrieval courses may I take?
A: Students are only allowed to take two IA credit retrieval courses along with their regular school day.
Q: How much are credit retrieval courses?

Q: How will I be graded in a credit retrieval course?
A: Assignments will be graded according to meeting standards for the course. If an assignment meets standards, a C grade will be recorded for that assignment. If a student demonstrates mastery of standards throughout the course, a final grade of C will be recorded and .5 credit earned. Should a student desire a higher grade than a C, the student will need to register and take the regular 18-week, one semester course.
Q: How will my student receive their final grade?
A: Final grades will be emailed to the student and parent by upon completion of the session. A "Course Report" will be mailed to the family within one week of session completion.
Q: Is there any software I will need for my classes?
