What is the Frayer Model?
The Frayer Model is a word classification activity. It helps you to more
thoroughly understand the meaning of the word or concept.
How will using the Frayer Model help me read better?
The Fayer Model helps you to:
- Analyze a word's essential and non-essential characteristics
- Refine your understanding of a concept or word by choosing examples and
non-examples
- Understanding what a concept or word isn't as well as what it is
How could I use the Frayer Model in a class?
Study the example below and then use the blank chart to analyze a word or
concept you are finding difficult to understand.

After studying the above sample try one on your own. Follow these steps.
- Place your word/concept on the line at the top of the model.
- Begin in the upper left-hand corner write the definition of the word/concept
in your own words.
- In the upper right hand corner write the characteristics of the word/concept.
- Brainstorm some examples and non-examples of the word/concept.
- Put the examples in the lower left-hand corner. Put the non-examples in
the lower right-hand corner.
- Save your work and feel free to add to this model.
