What is K - W - L?
K-W-L is a strategy that will help you predict and connect new
information with prior knowledge.
How will a K - W - L help me read better?
K-W-L will help you to:
- Brainstorm prior knowledge (things you already know about)
- Preview vocabulary and concepts
- Recall what you have read
- Focus on the assigned selection
How can I use a K - W - L in class?
Print off or make a copy of the chart below. Then:
- Brainstorm and list what you know or think you know about
the main topic
- List what you want to know about the topic.
- List interesting questions that come to mind as you are brainstorming
and thinking.
- Read the reading selection purposefully to discover answers for the questions
you have posed.
- After completing the reading, list important information you have learned
and questions you still might have. Remember your learning does not end,
but continues even after this reading!
