Example 1:

Matt bought 22.5 meters of edging for his garden. When he finished putting in the edging he had 105 decimeters left over.

  • How many meters of edging did Matt use in his garden?
  1. 21.45 meters
  2. 22.395 meters
  3. 12 meters
  4. 10.5 meters

To solve this problem, let's go through our 6 step process.

Step 1 - You need to find how many meters of edging Matt used in his garden.

Step 2 - You know that Matt bought 22.5 meters of edging and had 105 decimeters left over when he was finished.

Step 3 - Your plan for solving this problem is to convert 105 decimeters into meters and then use subtraction to find how much edging he used.

Step 4 - Since decimeters are smaller than meters, you estimate about 10 meters is what he had left and subtract that from 20 meters he bought, so he should have used about 10 meters of edging in his garden.

Step 5 - To solve this problem, you convert 105 decimeters into meters. To do this you divide 105 by 10 or in other words move the decimal point one place to the left. Therefore, you have 105 decimeters = 10.5 meters. Now you can subtract.

22.5 meters - 10.5 meters = 12 meters

Step 6 - You look over your choices and find that 12 meters is a choice, letter C.

Therefore you select letter C as your answer.
