Example 3:

For science class, Robby and Dianne need to measure the perimeter of the classroom. Robby uses a meter stick while Dianne uses her science book. When they finish measuring the perimeter of the classroom they have to report their findings to their classmates.

  • Who do you think the class will agree with as the more accurate measurement of the classroom?

Explain your answer using words, numbers, and/or pictures. (2 point response)

To be sure you receive both points for this problem, make sure that you have answered the question and then make sure that you explain your selection as to why you chose the solution you did.

For the first point, you need to answer the question. The answer to this question would be Robby.

For the second point, you need to explain and support the choice you made. The reason your answer to this question would be Robby instead of Dianne is because using a meter stick is a standard unit of measurement that will give you a more exact measurement than a science book. Using a science book would be useful if the students didn't have access to a meter stick and had to get an estimated measurement of the perimeter.
