Example 3:

Using the grid below, a rectangle is made when plotting these points, (-2,2), (3,2), and (3, -1). What is the fourth point needed to finish the rectangle?

  1. (2,-1)
  2. (-1,-2)
  3. (-2,-1)
  4. (1,-2)

To solve this problem you would begin by plotting the three points that you are given in the question. This will give you a very good idea of how your rectangle will be made. After plotting the three points, your grid would look like this:

With the points plotted, remember your definition of a rectangle. A rectangle is a figure with 4 sides and 4 right angles. You have three sides so far so all you need is the fourth side.

The fourth side should be the same length as the opposite side and form two right angles when added to the figure.

As you plot the fourth and final point, you notice that it is (-2,-1), letter C. Good!

Take a look at the points that make up your rectangle. Notice any patterns with the x and y-coordinates?
