Example 1:

How many lines of symmetry does this figure have? Explain your answer using words, numbers, and/or pictures.

B. 1
C. 2
D. 3

To solve this problem, you will need to understand two important parts of the problem before even getting started. First, you need to know what it means to find lines of symmetry. Remember, a line of symmetry is a line through a figure that when the figure could be folded on that line both sides will line up and be the same size and shape.

The second part you will need to be able to do is to recognize the geometric figure given to you. The figure is an equilateral triangle where all three sides are the same length.

Since you fully understand the question, it is time to solve the problem. One strategy in solving this one may be to draw a picture of the triangle or use the one given and begin to draw in lines where what is on one side of the line it is also on the other side.

You see by your picture that there are three lines of symmetry for this figure. If you were to fold along any of those three lines the parts of the triangle would match up perfectly. Therefore, for the first point for this problem, you would identify the answer to the question to be letter D, 3 lines of symmetry.

For the second point, in order to support your answer you could include your drawing where you drew the three lines of symmetry or you may include a short paragraph explaining what symmetry is and that the three lines you found would work for if you could fold along those lines. Be sure you are clear and that you express your understanding of finding lines of symmetry.
