Example 1:

A bag contains 6 white, 3 green, and 8 blue marbles. If 1 marble is drawn at random from the bag, what is the probability that the marble drawn is white?

  1. 1/6
  2. 1/17
  3. 6/11
  4. 6/17

Here is one way to solve this problem.

You want to be sure you fully understand what the problem is asking you to find. In this problem you need to find the probability of drawing out a white marble out of a bag of marbles.

Next, you remember your formula from the tips, P=E/N, where E is the number of possible outcomes of picking a white marble, E, and N the total number of likely outcomes.

P=E/N
P = 6 white marbles/17 total marbles
P = 6/17

You find the probability of picking a white marble from the bag is 6/17. This is letter D of your choices. So the answer to this problem is D, 6/17.
