Example 3:

Tyler made a scatter plot of data he found for students in different grades and the amount of time they spent doing homework after school.

  • Use Tyler's scatter plot to describe the relationship and trend between the students in different grades and the amount of homework they do outside of school.

Before you begin you need to be sure to understand what is expected of you for answering this question. This problem requires a short answer response, which means you are answering the question to get 2 points.

A scatter plot shows different points plotted on a graph and is used to help find trends and relationships between different things. In this case you need to look at the scatter plot or scattergram and see how the points that are plotted relate with students in different grades and how much time they spend doing homework after school.

As you look at the scattergram you notice that you can see that as students get into higher grade levels the more time they spend doing homework. The points appear to gradually increase in time as the student goes into the next grade.

Your answer for a problem like this would need to include the relationship between the grade levels and the amount of time spent doing homework. Here is where you would describe that based upon the points plotted it appears that students in lower grades spend less time doing homework and the higher the grade level the more time they spend doing homework.

The second part of the answer should address the trend that the scattergram seems to suggest. For this section of the answer you would include a generalized statement or two about as the grade level increases so does the amount of time spent doing homework.
