Practice 1:

Which set is ordered from greatest to least?

  1. {7/10,  .097,  1 7/9,  .79,  10/9}
  2. {1 7/9,  10/9,  .79,  7/10,  .097}
  3. {1 7/9,  10/9,  .097,  7/10,  .79}
  4. {10/9,  .97,  1 7/9,  .097,  7/10}

CalculatorHere are the steps you would want to follow to assist you in solving this problem.

  • To begin with we have whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. We need to rewrite each in a common form. Since we can rewrite all of them as decimals, let's do that first. On scrap paper, change the five terms we need to put in order, into decimal form. Type your answers in the box and then see if you are correct.

  • Now that each is rewritten as a decimal, we can begin to put them in the order that has been asked for. Since our largest place value is three places, we may want to add 0's at the end of those decimals with only one or two decimal places. List the decimals so that each has the same number of decimal places after the decimal then see if you are correct.

  • Reread the question to be sure that we get the correct order for our set. We are to go from greatest to least. Type in the order from greatest to least. Don't forget to see if you are correct.

  • Once again we now need to go back to our original set of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals to get our final answer. Put the terms in the correct order from greatest to least and check to see if you did it correctly.
