 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Reflection

Example 1:

Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction. 8 3/4

  1. 32/4
  2. 24/4
  3. 35/8
  4. 35/4

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

Step 1: Multiply the denominator, 4, by the whole number, 8, to get 32.

Step 2: Add the numerator to the product found in step 1. 32 + 3 = 35 This is the numerator for our improper fraction.

Step 3: Keep the same denominator as the fraction, 4, and build our improper fraction, 35/4.

The answer is 35/4 which matches with letter D above.
