Example 3:

Which set of fractions is ordered from largest to smallest in value?

  1. {2/3, 5/8, 5/6, 1/4}
  2. {5/8, 1/4, 2/3, 5/6}
  3. {1/4, 5/8, 2/3, 5/6}
  4. {5/6, 2/3, 5/8, 1/4}
  • To solve this problem the first thing you want to do is to find the least common multiple of 3, 4, 6, and 8 which are the denominators of the fractions. (hint >>)

  • Finding the LCM to be 24 we can now rewrite our fractions.
    2/3 = 16/24
    5/8 = 15/24
    5/6 = 20/24
    1/4 = 6/24

  • We can now order the fractions from largest to least.
    20/24, 16/24, 15/24, 6/24

  • Now we need to find the equivalent fraction of the fractions in the above order.
    5/6, 2/3, 5/8, 1/4

  • We look at our choices and we see that letter D has the same order we found to be true.
