Example 2:

There are four animal cages along a straight path at the zoo: the monkeys, the lions, the tigers, and the foxes. The monkeys are between the tigers and the foxes. The tigers are between the lions and the monkeys. The lions are first.

  • What is the correct order of the cages?
  1. lions, monkeys, tigers, foxes
  2. lions, tigers, foxes, monkeys
  3. lions, tigers, monkeys, foxes
  4. lions, foxes, tigers, monkeys

To solve this problem one strategy would be to make a simple drawing of where the animals are. Don't worry, you don't have to draw a lion or monkey, in fact the first letter of each animal should work just fine. Let's begin to solve this one.

Be sure you know the problem you are trying to solve. In this problem there are 4 animals in cages and you need to find the order of the cages. So let's begin with a simple table with 4 empty places to place the animals as we find them. The last statement tells us that the lions are first so let's put the lions in their first cage.

Lions

Let's read the first clue to help us, the monkeys are between the tigers and foxes. With this clue we are able to place the monkeys. With only three spots remaining and they are between the tigers and foxes, we know right where they should go.

Lions

Monkeys

The next clue tells us that the tigers are between the lions and monkeys. Looking at your table you can place the tigers in their cage as well as the foxes since there is only one spot for them.

Lions
Tigers
Monkeys
Foxes

You now have your animals in their cages in the correct order based upon the clues you were given. As you look over your choices you find that the answer to this problem is letter C. Good work!
