This problem is asking
for two questions to be answered, therefore
you are asked to give a 2 point response.
For the first part of the answer needed
you want to answer whether Mort is correct that since he has more coins than his sister,
he has more money. The second point will
be your explanation as to why you think
he is right or wrong. To answer this, you want
to be sure to understand the problem and
what Mort is saying.
With a problem like this, it may be helpful
to substitute in a possible situation or
two to see what Mort sees. Since Mort says
he has more coins than his sister Ruth, let's
put together a make believe situation.
As long as Mort has more coins than Ruth,
he is right, but is there a way that may
not have more money than Ruth? Let's try
a couple.
Pretend that Mort has 3 coins, a quarter,
a dime, and a penny. Let's say that since
Ruth has fewer coins let's give her 2 coins,
a quarter and a penny. In this instance,
Mort has 36 cents while Ruth has 26 cents
so Mort definitely has more money.
You know that there are many situations
where Mort can have more money than Ruth,
but are there times where Ruth would have
more money than Mort? How about this? What
if Mort has 3 coins, a dime, a nickel, and
a penny. That equals 16 cents. Ruth has fewer
coins so let's give her only 2 coins, a quarter
and a dime. Ruth has 35 cents! She has more
money than Mort in this instance. So, you
found out that either Ruth or Mort may have
the most money.
Now back to the question, is Mort right
that since he has more coins he has more
money? Your answer should be, no. Using the
examples above you found that Mort or Ruth
could have the most money based upon the
value of the coins.
For your answer to a question like this
be sure to include your answer of no and
then be clear with your explanation and include
examples that support your solution like
above.
