Example 1:

James and his three friends are going to a basketball game. Their tickets will cost $3.00 each. James figures the total cost like this:

$3.00 + 4 boys = $7.00

  • Is he correct?
  1. Yes.
  2. No, he added incorrectly.
  3. No, he should have divided $3.00 by 4 boys.
  4. No, he should have multiplied $3.00 times 4 boys.

In order to see if James is correct or not with his solution to the problem, you need to make sure that you understand the problem yourself. In this problem, James and three of his friends are going to a basketball game where it costs $3 for each to get in. He wants to figure out the total cost of the four of them to go to the game.

Before worrying about if James is correct or not, you want to go through the steps of solving this problem and then compare your solution with James'.

There are a couple of ways to solve this problem. The strategy you use will be to choose an operation. You could either add $3 four times for each of the boys or you can multiply the $3 by the four boys. Hopefully you chose to multiply $3 by the four boys.

Simply, you know that to solve this problem you would multiply $3 times the 4 boys to find that it will cost $12.

Now, look over James' work. You will notice two things incorrect with his solution compared with the way you solved it. First, he added 4 boys instead of multiplying and his final answer of $7 is incorrect compared to your answer of $12.

Look over your choices, A through D, and see which one best represents the correct way to solve this problem.

After reading over the four choices, you realize that letter D best shows what James should have done in order to come up with the correct answer. The answer is letter D.
