Tips to Remember:

Mathematical Communication

There are many ways to communicate-through speech, writing, gesture, touch, music or sound, symbol, drawing or art. To communicate, one must understand the “language” being used. Mathematical communication means being able to use words, numbers, symbols, and diagrams (or pictures) to gather, organize, and share information. It is important to be aware that communication involves both the sending and receiving of information. The receiver must be able to understand or interpret the sender’s message for communication to occur.

2 Steps to Gathering Information

Step 1: Develop a plan to collect information. Find answers to these questions:

  • What information do I know?
  • What information do I need to know?
  • Where and/or how can I find this information?
  • What is the question or problem?

Step 2: Access/Retrieve the information.
