In this lesson you will clearly organize, represent, and express mathematical information, and ideas, using mathematical language, in ways appropriate for the given audience and purpose.

Problem Solving Steps

Follow the problem solving tips to help solve the problem on your own.

  1. Understand the situation and the problem. What is the problem asking you? Look for key words and know what they mean.

  2. Analyze the data. Look at the information you are given to help solve the problem. What facts have you been given to solve the problem?

  3. Plan how you may be able to solve the problem. What strategy can you use to help solve the problem? Guess and check? Make a table or chart? Draw a picture? Others can be found within this course.

  4. Estimate the answer. Making a good educated guess or estimate of what the answer could be will help keep you focused on arriving at the correct answer.

  5. Solve the problem. Using your plan from step 3 work through the problem and arrive at your solution to the problem.

  6. Examine the answer. Check to see if you answered the question.
Expressing Answers Mathematically

When you respond to questions that ask you to show or demonstrate your understanding of a certain problem, be sure to do the following:

Be sure you fully understand the problem and what it is asking you to do. You may need to reread the problem over a few times until you feel comfortable working on the problem. Don't fake your way through the problem!

Solve the problem using the six steps for problem solving.

In the explanation of your answer be sure to organize your data and steps to your solution. Write your anwer in complete well-written sentences in paragraph form. Make sure that your thoughts and steps are in the correct order in your explanation.

Make sure that you reread over your explanation and try to solve the problem by following your explanation. Could anyone follow and understand your explanation? If you can answer yes, you have successfully completed the problem.

You may also want to use a list, a table, a chart, a drawing, or other methods to show your organization and presentation for the solution for your problem.

Be clear, be specific, and be complete in your answers.
