Example 3:

The data in the table below shows the average (mean) number of people riding in passenger cars, including the driver, for different years.

Nicholas wants to present this information to the class in the form of a graph.

  • Graph the data from the table on the grid below.
  • Give it an informative title.
  • Label the scales and axes.

Once again a 4 point response is needed for this problem. A 4 point response will use all the information in the chart to create an appropriate and accurate graph (line, bar graph or scatter plot) that includes the following:

  • Appropriate scales - the intervals should be less than or equal to .5 and show the viewer to see a downward trend in the data.
  • Consistent vertical scale - the intervals are consistent in number and spacing.
  • An appropriate title.
  • Appropriate labels on both the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • All six means are correctly graphed.

Notice the names of the different parts of a graph. Be sure to know how to construct a line graph or even a bar graph for problems like this one.
