Makes Connections
Lesson 29
Connect with Mathematics

Example:

Draw a polygon on the grid by connecting exactly 8 dots. Make the polygon have the largest possible area. Draw straight lines in any direction to connect the dots. You must use a ruler or straightedge.

This problem requires a 2 point short-answer. In this kind of problem, you won't be writing an explanation for your answer as the way you draw your polygon is your explanation.

A 2 point response will need to have both of the following:

  • 8 dots are connected to form a polygon.
  • The connected dots should enclose an area of at least 4 square units.

A 1 point response may have a diagram in which 6, 7, 9, or 10 dots connect to form a polygon with an area of at least 4 square units. Another possible 1 point response could be a diagram in which 8 dots are connected to form a polygon with an area of less than 4 square units.

As you already know, a 0 point response would show little if any understanding of the problem.

When you answer a problem like this, be sure to reread the problem a few times so that you fully understand what is being asked of you.

Let's take a look at some possible 2 point responses for this problem.

Is this how you would have drawn your polygons? I hope so!
