Lesson 3
Understanding Operations on Numbers
  Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 > Reflection

Example 2:

Find the sum of the following:

4/7 + 3/4

  1. 1 9/28
  2. 1 3/7
  3. 7/11
  4. 7/28

One way to solve this problem is the following:

Step 1: Since the fractions we are adding don't have common denominators, we must find the common denominator in order to be able to add these fractions. To do this we need to find the LCM of 4 and 7.

  • 4 - 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28
  • 7 - 7, 14, 21, 28

The LCM or common denominator will be 28.

Step 2: Change our fractions to equivalent fractions with the common denominator of 28.

  • 4x4 / 7x4 = 16/28
  • 3x7 / 4x7 = 21/28

Step 3: Now we can add our fractions.

16/28 + 21/28 = 37/28

Step 4: Since our choices as a fraction are not available we want to rewrite our answer as a mixed number, 1 9/28. Therefore, the correct answer is letter A.
