Lesson 3
Understanding Operations on Numbers
  Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 > Reflection

Example 3:

Do the division for the following:

4/5 3/8

  1. 12/40
  2. 7/40
  3. 2 8/15
  4. 2 2/15

Here is one way to solve this problem:

Step 1: Rewrite our problem with the two steps required for solving fraction division problems. First we take the reciprocal of the divisor, 3/8, and change it to 8/3. Then we change the operation sign from division to multiplication.

4/5 x 8/3

Step 2: Multiply the numerators and then multiply the denominators.

4 x 8 / 5 x 3 = 32/15

Step 3: Since our improper fraction doesn't show up as one of the choices, we need to rewrite the fraction as a mixed number.

32/15 = 2 2/15

Our answer is letter D, 2 2/15.
