Example 4:

Solve the following mathematical sentence:

39 - 2 x 9 + (18 3) - 4 x (2+1)

One way of solving this sentence is the following:

Step 1: According to the Order of Operations, we take care of parenthesis first.

39 - 2 x 9 + 6 - 4 x 3

Step 2: Next, we take care of multiplication.

39 - 18 + 6 - 12

Step 3: Addition is next.

39 - 24 - 12

Step 4: Finish up with the subtraction.
