Example 1:

Billy went on a shopping spree in April. He used his credit card to make purchases of $45, $78, $35, and $109.

  • Assuming Billy doesn't use the card for the rest of the month, what will be the total new charges on Billy's next statement?
  1. $265
  2. $267
  3. $271
  4. $276

Here is one way to solve this problem:

Step 1: Understand the problem. Billy went shopping and bought items on his credit card. We need to find out how much he spent as this will be his new total charges on his card for the month.

Step 2: Analyze the data. Billy bought items for $45, $78, $35, and $109.

Step 3: Plan. We can choose an operation to help solve this problem. We want to add the cost of the items he bought.

Step 4: Estimate. Doing some mental math and rounding in our head, we can estimate $50, $100, $50, $100 for the purchases and get an estimate of about $300.

Step 5: Solve the problem. We need to add the cost of the items Billy bought.

45 + 78 + 35 + 109 = 267

Step 6: Examine our solution. Our answer is $267 spent by Billy and to be charged on his credit card. Our answer is close to our estimate which is good.

Therefore our answer would be B, $267.
