Example 3:

If Brad spends $185 per month on gas and electricity, how much does he spend on gas and electricity in one year?

  1. $2220
  2. $1850
  3. $2250
  4. $2300

One way to solve this problem:

Step 1: Understand the problem. We need to find the amount of money Brad spends in a year on gas and electricity.

Step 2: Analyze the data. We know Brad spends $185 a month on gas and electricity. There are 12 months in a year.

Step 3: Plan. We will choose to use multiplication for this solution.

Step 4: Estimate. We can round the $185 a month to $200 and multiply that by the 12 months. Our estimate would be $2400.

Step 5: Solve. We multiply $185 times 12 months.

185 x 12 = 2220
Step 6: Examine our answer. Our final answer is $2220 is spent by Brad paying for gas and electricity. Once again you are really close with your estimate in step 4.

Therefore our answer would be A, $2220.
