Example 2:

Suppose you earn $370.40 a week for working 40 hours.

  • Set up a ratio to find your pay rate in dollars per hour and then solve the ratio to find your pay rate.

Here is one way to find the pay rate:

Step 1: Set up your information into a ratio:

pay for 40 hours / 40 hours = $370.40 / 40

Step 2: Find an equivalent ratio with 1 in the denominator. Solve your ratio with division by dividing both numerator and denominator by 40 (this will give us 1 in the denominator).

  • $370.40 divided by 40 / 40 hours divided by 40
    $9.26 / 1 hour

Step 3: Answer the question being asked. This tells us you make $9.26 an hour.
