Example 3:

The ratio of boys to girls in the 8th grade is 4 to 5. There are 84 boys in the 8th grade class.

  • How many girls are in the 8th grade class?

Here is one way to solve this problem:

Step 1: Set up the ratio of boys to girls using the information that we are given.

  • 4 boys / 5 girls = 84 boys / x girls
  • 4 / 5 = 84 / x

Step 2: Use cross multiplication.

  • 4 * x = 84 * 5
  • 4x = 420

Step 3: Next, we need to find the missing value, x, by getting it by itself on one side of the equation.

  • 4x / 4 = 420 / 4
  • x = 105

Step 4: Answer the question.

There are 105 girls in the 8th grade class.
