Example 2:

The Smith's are moving to a new house. Mark and Garrett have to pack up all of their stuff from their bedrooms to put in the moving van. There are two different size boxes they can use. The first box is 36 inches long, 18 inches deep, and 12 inches wide. The second box is 28 inches long, 20 inches deep, and 14 inches wide.

  • Which box should the boys choose to pack with so that they can put more into the box so there will be fewer boxes to load into the van?

Explain in detail how you found your answer using words, numbers, and/or pictures.
(2 point response required)

Since this is a 2 point response, short answer question, you need to be sure to give an answer to the question and then an explanation of your solution.

To solve this problem you need to find the volume of each of the two boxes. Begin by finding the volume of the first box.

V = l x w x h
V = 36 x 12 x 18
V = 432 x 18
V = 7776 cubic inches

The first box will hold 7776 cubic inches of "stuff" from their room.

Now, find the volume of the second box.

V = l x w x h
V = 28 x 14 x 20
V = 392 x 20
V = 7840 cubic inches

The second box will hold 7840 cubic inches of "stuff" from their room.

With the math finished, it is time to answer the question and be sure to get both points offered on it.

1 point - First, be sure to answer the question. You would begin by stating that the answer is the second box will hold more of the boys "stuff" from their room.

1 point - For the second point to the question, you need to explain your solution and defend your answer. There are a couple of ways you can show your solution. One way would be to show your work finding the volume of the two boxes like above. You may also explain your solution in paragraph form, explaining how you found the volume of the two boxes by multiplying their length times width times height, and then chose the box with the greatest amount of volume. This part depends upon you and how comfortable you are in showing and explaining your work.
