Example 4:

Your high school is refilling its swimming pool. The rectangular shaped pool has a fixed depth of 7.5 feet and is 90 feet long and 42 feet wide. Water costs $.02 per cubic foot. The school put aside $575 in their budget to fill the pool.

  • Will they have enough money to fill the pool?

Explain in detail how you found your answer using words, numbers, and/or pictures.

Since this is a two point answer, remember you will need an answer to the question and then an explanation to support your answer.

For the first point, be sure to give the answer to the question.

The school will have enough money to fill their swimming pool at $.02 per cubic foot.
(1 point)

For the second point, you would explain how you found your answer to be true.

You need to find the volume of the pool and how much water is needed to fill the pool. To find the volume of the pool you begin with the formula and substitute for the variables.

V = l x w x h
V = 90 x 42 x 7.5
V = 28350 cubic feet

The pool requires 28350 cubic feet of water to be full. The next step is to find out how much filling the pool costs when a cubic foot of water costs $.02. To find this you multiply your total number of cubic feet needed by $.02.

28350 x .02
567

You just found out that it will cost the school $567 to fill the pool this year which is under budget so they can fill the pool. Maybe with the leftover money they can buy some snorkels and flippers!

Your 2nd point would be determined by how well you explain your steps above support your answer of yes, to the question.
