Example 5:

Bananas are on sale at 5 pounds for $1.

  • How much should you pay for 9 pounds of bananas?
  1. $1.50
  2. $1.80
  3. $2.00
  4. $5.00

Here is one way to solve this problem using our rate formula.

X dollars x 5 pounds/1 dollar = 9 pounds

To solve for X, you multiply both sides by the inverse or 1 dollar/5 pounds.

  • X dollars = 9 pounds x 1 dollar / 5 pounds
  • X dollars = 9 x 1 dollar / 5 (Notice that the pounds 'divide out' each other.)
  • X dollars = 9 dollars/5
  • X dollars = 1.80 dollars or $1.80.

Therefore our answer to this question is letter B, $1.80.
