Lesson 9
Approximation and Precision
  Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples 1 | 2 | 3 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 > Reflection

Example 1:

Two students measure the width of a classroom to the nearest unit. The first student used a toothpick as a unit and the second used a broomstick as a unit.

  • Which one had a measurement that was more precise?
  • Clearly explain your answer using words, pictures, and/or numbers.
The first thing you would notice about this question is that it requires an answer to the question and an explanation of your answer, for a possible two points for your response.
To begin, state your answer to the question, which student had a measurement that was more precise? Your answer should be the student using toothpicks.

With your answer you want to be sure to include an explanation to support your selection. In your explanation you would need to include something about the smaller the units you measure with the more precise your measurements will be. Since a toothpick is much smaller than a broomstick, measuring with a toothpick would make your measurement of the room more precise.
