Tips:

  • First, read the question carefully before looking at the answers.

  • Look for key words
Read every word in the question. Sometimes there are key words that will help you pick the correct answer. Pay close attention to these words. If you overlook one of these key words, you could miss a question that you really know. Some of these key words are listed below:

    PROPORTION EXPLAIN RELATIONSHIP APPROXIMATE
    COMPARE PREDICT SOLVE SHOW
    DIFFERENCE PRODUCT SUM TOTAL

  • Follow these 6 steps for solving math problems.
    1. Understand the situation and the problem. What is the problem asking you?

    2. Analyze the data. Look at the information you are given to help solve the problem.

    3. Plan how you may be able to solve the problem. What strategy can you use to help solve the problem? Guess and check? Make a table or chart? Draw a picture? Others can be found within this course.

    4. Estimate the answer. Making a good educated guess or estimate of what the answer could be will help keep you focused on arriving at the correct answer.

    5. Solve the problem. Using your plan from step 3 work through the problem and arrive at your solution to the problem.

    6. Examine the answer. Check your answer. Does your answer appear as a possible choice to choose from? Can you use substitution or the opposite operation to check your answer to see if it works?

  • Read all the answer choices.

  • Use the 'process of elimination' and make a decision of yes, no, or maybe as you read each answer.
    • NO answers are choices you can definitely eliminate.
    • MAYBE answers are ones you might want to consider again.
    • For YES answers, tell yourself WHY this is a YES answer. "This is true because ... "
    • If you don't find a YES answer, try eliminating at least one choice. If you can make the best choice between two possible MAYBE answers, you are making a smart guess, an educated guess. You have increased your chances of selecting the best answer to fifty-fifty.

  • Answer every question.
Each correct answer is worth one point. The easy questions are worth one point, and the difficult questions are worth one point. Answer the easy questions first, then take time for the hard questions.

  • Review your answers if there is time.

Let's try a couple multiple choice questions together.
