Practice 1- Instruction:

It is hard to listen to the speaker in "Four Skinny Trees" without responding to her thoughts, comparisions, emotions, and strength "to keep." As you read this poem again, think about something that gives you strength in tough times. How does it compare to the trees?

Four Skinny Trees

Before Reading:

Read the prompt you will be answering, so there is a place in your brain to file away responses as you read! As you read, be aware of your own thoughts and feelings and see if you've ever experienced something like the speaker.

Short Answer Prompt:

The speaker in this poem gains strength from four skinny trees in her neighborhood. What effect does this poem have on you? What does this poem make you think of? Why does it make you think of this? Use words from the poem to explain your thoughts. Don't forget to include all three key elements needed for a solid 2 point response!

  1. Your answer to the question: What effect does the poem have on you?
  2. An explanation of what the poem makes you think of and why.
  3. Your explanation should be supported by ideas from the poem.

IMPORTANT: In a question like this, there is NOT one right answer. The quality of your answer is based on your thoughtful response, and how you connect the ideas from the poem to your own ideas and responses.

Choose ONE of the following three options for writing your response.

1.
If Microsoft Word is available on your computer, this document allows you to type your answer, use spell check, save, copy/paste text, and/or print the page to turn in.
<< Click here to open a word form for your response.

2.
This file can be printed, and allows you to use your best penmanship (yes, real writing instead of typing), and turn it in to your teacher.
<< Click here to open a .pdf file for your response.

3.
Copy/Paste
If you are a student taking this class through IA, you will need to use this document for your response. Follow directions on your checklist to copy/paste into an e-mail.

You are the an expert at scoring short answer responses now. Go ahead and score your own writing using this criteria:

Points Rubric
2
  • responds to appropriate information from the poem
  • develops thoughtful interpretations of the speaker's identification with the trees, and explains a personal response
  • makes thoughtful comparisons with sufficient, relevant evidence from poem to similar situations (What does it make you think of and why?)
1
  • limited response and offers basic or superficial explanation of effect of poem
  • develops average or simple interpretations of the speaker's identification with the trees, and includes a personal response
  • attempts to use evidence from poem to connect to similar situations (What does it make you think of and why?)
0
  • little or no understanding of the strength the speaker gets from the trees
  • may answer "I don't know."
  • no example of own and no evidence from poem

This may help identify the key elements in your writing.

Yes No Criteria
I explained the effect the poem had on me.
I included something this poem makes me think of and explained why it does, using ideas from the poem to support my explanation.

If you check both yes buttons, chances are you earned 2 points! Way to go.

If you didn't check both yes buttons, take a look at what was missing, and go back and revise your answer until you can check both yes buttons!

When you are totally satisfied with your answer, print the Word document with your answer and score for your teacher.

Maybe you would like to write back to the speaker and tell her about what gives you strength.
