Practice 2 - Instruction

Review Living in the Desert, from TimeLife Books. It is linked on the right. In this practice question, you'll be focusing on supporting details.

"Living in the Desert"

Before completing the question, let's be prepared. In the last practice question, you highlighted main ideas in the article. In paragraphs 1, 3, 4 and 5, be sure that the first sentence of each paragraph is highlighted. Now, underline two supportive details for each main idea.

Remember these tips:

  • A supporting detail is a fact, a statement, a quote, or an event, that holds up a major idea.
  • Supporting details prove the main or important idea.
  • Think of the important idea as the top floor of the Space Needle. The supporting details are all the metal pieces holding it up.

The third paragraph would look like this:

Leaving your skin bare can make you hotter, because it absorbs the sun's radiation. There is also the risk of skin damage: a chastening statistic is that in Queensland, Australia, about 75 percent of people over the age of 65 have skin cancer. The long, flowing robes traditionally worn by Arabs are an effective form of dress. They protect the skin from the damaging rays of the sun, but also allow air to circulate so that perspiration can evaporate.

Now, you do the same thing for paragraphs 4 and 5.

  • If you have the page printed, this will be easy.
  • Or write the beginning of each supportive detail on a piece of paper, like taking notes.
  • If neither option works for you, identify two supportive details from each paragraph in your mind as you review the article.

Now you're more than prepared for the question.
