Lesson 12
Summarizing Text
   Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples 1 | 2 | 3 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Self Check

Example 1:

Instruction:

If you recently completed Lesson 11, you'll remember the article "The Ups and Downs of Space Travel." Click on the book icon to the right and open the passage. You have read it carefully already, so you might skim or review the key points again for a refresher. Keep the tips about summarizing in mind.

In this example, you aren't doing the writing, you're doing the evaluating! You be the teacher. You're working with two students who are ready to show off their skill of summarizing the information in this article. Evaluate their writing!

Thoughts on an Abacus
The Ups and Downs
of Space Travel

Short Answer Prompt:

Summarize the main points of this selection in your own words. Be sure to include at least three main points in your summary.

Remember, you're a teacher who is evaluating student writing. Remember to:

  • Know what the question is asking.
    • Think: Prompt is asking students to summarize the main points of the article, including at least three main points in their summary.
    • Summary has to be in the student's own words.

  • Be very familiar with the passage and know how you would answer the question.
    • Do: Write a summary yourself using the article, and including at least three main points, so that you have a good model to compare to the student writing.

  • Know the key elements needed for a response to be complete.
    • Think: Student must figure out which are the main points, and write about at least three main of them in their summary. The main points included would be:
Main Points
Student might include:
Information about microgravity
  • definition
  • bad for body
  • bad for astronauts
The problem(s) it involves (the effect of microgravity)
  • balance
  • space sickness
  • blood system works differently
  • muscle weakness/atrophy
  • up and down confusion
  • bones lose calcium
  • fainting
The need for a solution to the problem(s)
  • suits
  • exercise
  • more study
  • Understand the scoring criteria.
    • Think:
      • A two point answer would show thorough understanding of the main points, be written in the student's own words, and include three main points.
      • A one point answer would show partial understanding of the main points, but might not include three in their summary.
      • A zero point answer might be "I don't know." Or it might include a statement that is not a main idea.

Let's see how Student 1 answers this prompt. We will use this criteria above to figure out this student's score:

Prompt: Summarize the main points of this selection in your own words. Be sure to include at least three main points in your summary.

Student 1 Answer:

The main points are in space flight there is microgravity and not any zero gravity. Microgravity does a downgrade of the muscles and bones to make astronauts weaker and less active on earth. They must exercise everyday to keep their muscles and bones in shape.

Think about what score Student 1 earned for this response. Does the student include these key elements? See if you can identify where each is included.

Yes No Main Points Included

Information about microgravity
Type the sentence where the student tells about microgravity:

The problem(s) it involves (the effect of microgravity)
Type the sentence where the student tells about the problems of microgravity:

The need for a solution to the problem(s)
Type the sentence where the student tells about a solution to the problem.

How does this chart compare to the scoring criteria? As a teacher, what score would you assign to Student 1's response?

Student 1 Score
2 1 0

As a teacher, write a comment to Student 1, explaining the score earned by the answer.

Let's score another response.

Prompt: Summarize the main points of this selection in your own words. Be sure to include at least three main points in your summary.

Student 2Answer:

Gravity is very important. Without the weight of gravity, you can eventually become lighter and weaker because your bones slowly lose calcium. This happens when you don't have the weight of gravity to work against.

Think about what score Student 2 earned for this response. Does the student include the key elements?
Yes No Main Points Included

Information about microgravity
Type the sentence where the student tells about microgravity:

The problem(s) it involves (the effect of microgravity)
Type the sentence where the student tells about the problems of microgravity:

The need for a solution to the problem(s)
This information is not addressed by this student.
How does this chart compare to the scoring criteria? As a teacher, what score would you assign to Student 2's response?
Student 2 Score
2 1 0
As a teacher, write a comment to Student 2, explaining the score earned by the answer:

You probably wrote something like this to Student 2:

Does it help to see the writing of other students? Which student matched your own answer to the question? How would you help Student 2 understand how to pick up on the third main idea in their summary?
Let's look at other examples before we begin practice items.
