Practice 3 - Instruction:

Often we read for information about how to do something: how to put together a bike, how to fill out a job application, how to make a pizza, how to operate a video game, how to build a computer, how to pass a driving exam. Here's a fun activity you can do with a neighbor you are babysitting. First read the directions in P is Paper Tops. Click on the book icon to the right and open the passage. Keep the tips about summarizing in mind.

P is for Paper Tops

Reading "how to" directions is a bit different than reading an article. Still, you are reading for information. The formatting of the text is important, as well as the headings. Read the headings first. Usually in "how to" make or bake directions, there are materials listed, followed by a step by step process.

Use these questions as you work on this multiple choice question.

Does this summary statement . . .
  • state the main ideas of a text passage?.
  • present information that is clear and concise (brief)?
  • focus only on information (main ideas) from the text?
  • follow the sequence of events in the text?
  • just include the facts and avoid interpretations or judgement?
