Do you think wild animals should be tamed as pets? Could a wolf or fox be a pet? Is it necessary to experiment on animals? As you read, "Dogs and People," think about these questions. Click on the book icon to the right and open the passage.

The question for this passage asks you to use your predicting and inferring skills to think beyond the information in the article. Get those thinking skills ready.

Dogs and People

  • Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to file away ideas as you read!
  • Before reading, think about how you feel about these statements:
    • Wild animals should be tamed as pets.
    • It is necessary to experiment on animals.
    • Scientists should continue to tame wild animals.
    • Early humans were wise to tame wolves as pets.
  • As you read, pay attention to the title, headings, pictures and captions. Be aware of how they help you understand what the article is about.

You are the an expert at scoring short answer responses now. Go ahead and score your own writing using this criteria:

  • A two point answer would show understanding of the experiments, include a prediction about what would happen if Dr. Belyaev continued his experiments, and include one detail from the article to support the prediction.
  • A one point answer would show partial understanding of the experiments, but might include only a prediction without a supporting detail from the text.
  • A zero point answer might be, "I don't know." Or it might include a prediction not relating to the experiment.

This may help identify the key elements in your writing.

Yes No Criteria
I wrote in my own words.
In my prediction, I focused on the pattern of results from the experiments in the article.
My prediction uses information from the article.
I included at least one detail from the article to support my prediction.

If you check all four yes buttons, chances are you earned 2 points! Way to go.

If you didn't check all four yes buttons, take a look at what was missing, and go back and revise your answer until you can check all four yes buttons!

When you are totally satisfied with your answer, print the Word document with your answer and score for your teacher.

You've worked hard! Let's try another multiple choice question.
