Consider carefully the two paragraphs
under the subtitle: A Controversial Design.
Words in a subtitle should relate to
the text following the subtitle. The author is giving
the reader a clue about the content of the information
to follow a subtitle. That means you don't need to go
looking all over the passage for the answer. It should
be in the paragraphs following the subtitle.
Think:
What are the key
words in this question? (subtitle,
design, controversial)
What is this question asking me to do?
(determine the best meaning
for controversial from the information in the
text).
Notice the word "controversy"
used in the second sentence: "Immediately,
the design sparked a controversy that threatened
its very existence." Even from this sentence,
you know the word "controversial" and
"controversy" are powerful enough to
threaten and possibly destroy the design.
Look at other clues in this section
subtitled, "A Controversial Design:"
controversy threatened design's existence
"Many people didn't like 'The Wall,'"
in spite of controversy, Lin stood by her design,
believed in her design
strength of her convictions carried them through
the conflict (Did you notice? Conflict might
be a a word to help define controversy.)
