Instruction:

Review, "Honoring Our Forgotten Heroes," linked to the book icon on the right.

Question:

Why does the author use the word controversial in the subtitle on page 23 to describe Lin's design for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?

Honoring Our
Forgotten Heroes

Remember to:

  • Read the question before reading the passage.
  • Consider carefully the two paragraphs under the subtitle: A Controversial Design.
  • Words in a subtitle should relate to the text following the subtitle. The author is giving the reader a clue about the content of the information to follow a subtitle. That means you don't need to go looking all over the passage for the answer. It should be in the paragraphs following the subtitle.

Think:

  • What are the key words in this question? (subtitle, design, controversial)
  • What is this question asking me to do? (determine the best meaning for controversial from the information in the text).
  • Notice the word "controversy" used in the second sentence: "Immediately, the design sparked a controversy that threatened its very existence." Even from this sentence, you know the word "controversial" and "controversy" are powerful enough to threaten and possibly destroy the design.
  • Look at other clues in this section subtitled, "A Controversial Design:"
    • controversy threatened design's existence
    • "Many people didn't like 'The Wall,'"
    • in spite of controversy, Lin stood by her design, believed in her design
    • strength of her convictions carried them through the conflict (Did you notice? Conflict might be a a word to help define controversy.)
  • Before we look at the answer choices, do you have a fairly good idea about what controversial might mean? Let's see how closely you deciphered the context clues.
