Practice 2 - Instruction:

Open "Dogs and People" to practice figuring out the meaning of a word from the context. It is linked to the book icon on the right.

Dogs and People

Reviewing the entire passage would be beneficial. When you get to the subheading, "Tameness Test," highlight the second paragraph.

Look for context clues surrounding the word to be defined:

  • synonyms
  • definition or description following or preceding the word
  • use of the word in a series

Question:

What is the meaning of the word "juvenile" in the second paragraph of the section titled "Tameness Test"?

TIP: Carefully read the second paragraph of "Tameness Test." One strategy for this question would be to use each answer in place of juvenile in the sentence where it appears. Then see if it fits the idea of the whole paragraph.

  • For example, the original sentence is: Tameness is sometimes called a juvenile characteristic.
  • Replace Answer A: Intelligent, in the sentence. Tameness is sometimes called an intelligent characteristic.
  • Ask yourself if that makes sense with the rest of the information in the paragraph. Does it fit?
