Example 3:

Instruction:

Let's visit our famous bag-shaped, spineless mollusk, "The Octopus." You'll find the passage linked to the book icon on the right. Then we'll work through a multiple choice question where the text features relay important information.

The Octopus

Question:

Which information appears only in the picture caption and not in the selection?

Think:

What are the key words in this question?

  • information only picture caption and NOT in selection

What is a caption?

  • remember, a caption includes the words under a picture or graph, and usually explains something about the picture or graph.

A strategy to determine this answer is to focus on the caption information, the words next to the picture:

  • "An octopus has a double row of suckers on each of its arms, which it uses in capturing and holding its prey. A giant Pacific octopus like this one could be 30 feet long."

Then look for the same information in the text. If it is there, you can eliminate the answer choice. If the information is not there, you have found your answer.

The chart for your answers has been set up for you to determine if the information is in the caption, in the text, or in both. This is a strategy you might use in other questions as well.
