Practice 4 - Instruction:

If you're biking around Lake Washington, or on the Interurban Trail, you won't be alone. In-line skaters sharing your path will zip by and around you. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, popular with teenagers, children, and families for entertainment and exercise. Open "In-Line Skating" to find out more! We'll use this passage in several lessons, but for now, concentrate on the text features that help give you an overview of the information in the article.

In-Line Skating

Tips:

  • Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to file away ideas as you read!
  • Skim the article, making note of the text features and thinking what each section might be about.
  • Focus on the text features, and choose to read carefully one entire section that appears interesting to you. This should give you enough information to answer the prompt effectively.

Short Answer Prompt:

Choose one main section that is interesting to you. Explain two ways the headings and other divisions help you understand the section. Include information from the section in your answer.

You are the an expert at scoring short answer responses now. Go ahead and score your own writing using this criteria:

  • A two point answer would analyze headings and other divisions; make two connections to the text, explain how they are relevant; help the reader understand information; be written in the student's own words, and include details from the text.
  • A one point answer would explain a limited relationship between the headings and other divisions and the information in the text, and might not include details from the text
  • A zero point answer might be "I don't know." Or it might include a statement that is does not refer to the headings and other divisions.

This may help identify the key elements in your writing.

Yes No Criteria
I indicated the section I choose and wrote the passage in my own words.
I explained two ways the headings and other divisions helped me understand the section.
I included information from the selection in my answer.

If you check all three yes buttons, chances are you earned 2 points! Way to go.

If you didn't check all three yes buttons, take a look at what was missing, and go back and revise your answer until you can check all three yes buttons!

When you are totally satisfied with your answer, print the Word document with your answer and score for your teacher.

You've worked hard! Let's try another short answer prompt.
