 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples: 1 | 2 | 3 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Self Check

Example 3:

Instruction:

Read or review, "Honoring Our Forgotten Heroes," linked to the book icon on the right. Then we'll work through one last short answer example before you take off on your own to practice skills of connecting information within the text.

In this example, you aren't doing the writing, you're doing the evaluating! Be the teacher, ready to help your students get the best score possible.

Short Answer Prompt:

Contrast the feelings about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before and after it was built. Include information from the selection in your answer.

As a teacher, what are you looking for in your students' responses?

  • A two point answer would include text-based information describing the feelings about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
    • before it was built and
    • after it was built.
  • A one point answer would include only one of the elements above, either the feelings about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before OR after it was built. The comparison would be missing.
  • A zero point answer might be, "I don't know." Or it might include a statement that does not relate to the feelings about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before or after it was built.

Now you actually take a few minutes and write your own summary so that you have a guide to make your evaluations. You write:

Prompt: Contrast the feelings about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial before and after it was built. Include information from the selection in your answer.

Your Answer (of course you earn a 2 point score!):

Before it was built, many people did not like it, but others, like Lin and Jan Scruggs, the Vietnam veteran who lobbied to build the memorial, believed in the design. After it was built, the public's attitude changed, and now it is the most visited memorial in the United States.

Here are the two writings from your sudents. Evaluate them and match the score to their answers by dragging and dropping the score earned by each friend.

Student 1 writes:

When Maya Lin introduced the plan about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the public, there was a hugh controversy. Despite everything she stood her ground. Now it is one of the most visited monuments in the U.S.

Student 2 writes:

Before the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built, people didn't like the design.

Now on to your own practice in making connections within the text.
