Practice 3 - Instruction:

You met Vera Rubin, a modern day astronomer in a previous lesson. Review her interview in "Spiraling Among the Stars."

Then meet "Maria Mitchell: First Woman Astronomer in America." Although these two women lived in different centuries, there are many common elements in their career paths.

Both selections are linked to the book icons on the right.

Tips:

  • Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to file away solutions as you read!
  • Before reading, divide a piece of paper in half. Take notes on the characteristics and events in the life of Vera Rubin on one side. On the other side, take notes about Maria Mitchell. When you are finished reading, highlight the similarities you find in the lives of Rubin and Mitchell, two astronomers from different centuries.

Short Answer Prompt:

  • A two point answer would show understanding of the ways Vera Rubin and Maria Mitchell are alike by listing three similarities, and using the text to support the similarities.
  • A one point answer would show partial understanding of the ways Vera Rubin and Maria Mitchell are alike by listing 2-3 ways they are similar. Text based support may be lacking.
  • A zero point answer might be "I don't know." Or the list of ways Vera Rubin and Maria Mitchell are alike might include 1 similarity. No text based information, or non-supportive information may be included.

This may help identify the key elements in your writing.

Yes No Criteria
I wrote in my own words.
I listed three ways Vera Rubin is like Maria Mitchell.
I used information from the text to support my answers.

If you check all three yes buttons, chances are you earned 2 points! Way to go.

If you didn't check all three yes buttons, take a look at what was missing, and go back and revise your answer until you can check all three yes buttons!

When you are totally satisfied with your answer, print the Word document with your answer and score for your teacher.

You've worked hard! It's time to check your learning.
