Lesson 19
Evaluating Reasons and Ideas
 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples: 1 | 2 > Practice: 1 | 2 > Self Check

Practice 1 - Instruction:

This time, as you read, "Dogs and People," try to identify what the author thinks about wolves as pets. Click on the book icon to the right and open the passage.

The question for this passage asks you to use your evaluating skills to think beyond the information in the article. Get those thinking skills ready.

Dogs and People

Tips:

  • Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to file away reasons and ideas as you read!
  • Before reading, divide a piece of paper in half, in order to take notes on the author's ideas about wolves as pets. Label one half of the paper REASONS to have a wolf as a pet, and the other half, REASONS NOT to have a wolf as a pet. Jot down ideas as you read.

Short Answer Prompt:

Many people like to have wolves as pets. Would the author think this is a good idea? Include TWO details from the selection in your answer.

You are the an expert at scoring short answer responses now. Go ahead and score your own writing using this criteria:

  • A two point answer would evaluate whether the author would think it's a good idea to have a wolf as a pet, and include TWO supporting details from the text.
  • A one point answer would partially evaluate whether the author would think it's a good idea ot have a wolf as a pet, but might only discuss one text-based detail.
  • A zero point answer might be "I don't know." Or it might include a detail that is not text based, or make an evaluation with no supporting details.

This may help identify the key elements in your writing.

Yes No Criteria
I wrote in my own words.
I stated whether the author would think it's a good idea to have a wolf as a pet.
I included TWO details from the text to support my evaluation.

If you check all three yes buttons, chances are you earned 2 points! Way to go.

If you didn't check all three yes buttons, take a look at what was missing, and go back and revise your answer until you can check all three yes buttons!

When you are totally satisfied with your answer, print the Word document with your answer and score for your teacher.

You've worked hard! Let's try another short answer question.
