Lesson 20
Extending Information Beyond the Text
 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Example: 1 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 > Self Check

Example 1:

Instruction:

Thomas Alva Edison set a high standard for inventing useful products for daily life. We switch on the lights without even thinking of life without them. We listen to music or talk on the phone, not realizing it was Edison who invented the grandfather of our cd players, and our cell phones. Review, "Thomas Alva Edison." It is linked to the book icon on the right.

As you read, jot down the different inventions mentioned that we use as common items. The question for this passage asks you to use your thinking skills to think beyond information in the article. Get those thinking skills ready.

Thomas Alva Edison

Short Answer Prompt:

How would today's world be different without Thomas Edison's inventions?

  • Include two inventions from the selection in your answer.

Remember in an example exercise, you are working with scoring and evaluting answers already written. Included in this example are a two point and a one point written response. See if you can determine which is which. First, let's look at the criteria used to evaluate the two responses.

  • A two point response uses two text-based ideas to explain how today's world would be different without Edison's inventions.
  • A one point response uses one text-based idea to explain how today's world would be different without Edison's inventions.
  • A zero point answer might be, "I don't know." Or it might make a statement not related to the question prompt.
  • Now you might want to take just a few minutes and write your own TWO point response so you have something to compare to the two other responses.

Here are the two different responses. Evaluate and score each response.

Student 1 writes:

Lightbulbs, because we wouldn't have light at night, only the moon. Without wax paper we wouldn't have candles.

Student 2 writes:

Today's world would be different in many ways without Thomas Edison's inventions. In the story it said that communication was improved when Thomas improved the telephone and telegraph. Also Thomas invented the lightbulb. If we didn't have the lightbulb today, life would be difficult. Also in the story it said he invented waxed paper, gasmasks, and he was the first to make a newspaper on a moving train. Life would be difficult without these things.
