Sometimes it is not enough just figure out what a word means, but you need to pull in your thinking resources to interpret or figure out why the author uses the chosen words? Here is an example of phrases the author uses that relate to the whole meaning of the article. Remember the editorial, "When pennies make too little sense," about the cost of producing pennies? Review the passage by clicking on the book icon on the right and then check out the wording used by the author. We get to interpret the author's choice of phrasing.

Why does the author use such phrases as "penny candy," "penny arcade," and "penny whistle"?

Remember to:

  • Read the question before reading the passage. Focus on the phrases "penny candy," "penny arcade," "penny whistle."
  • Think about what you already inferred from the editorial: The GAO is responsible for analyzing the cost of producing money.
  • Keep the title in your mind, along with the findings of the GAO that it costs more to produce and handle pennies than they are worth.
