Example 2:

What is so special about sisters? The author of the poem "Sisters," and the author of the essay, "Laughter" will tell you!

Instruction:

Read the poem "Sisters," and the short selection, "Laughter," by Sandra Cisneros. The sisters in the poem have lots of fun together. So do the sisters in "Laughter." The poem and the story are about a strong relationship between sisters.

You'll find both linked to the book icons on the right. Then keep the selections open while we go through the question and explanations.

Before Reading:

Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to fit connections together!

Short Answer Prompt:

Explain how the sisters in the poem are like the sisters in "Laughter." How are they different? Use evidence from the texts.

Sisters

Laughter

Remember to:

  • Look for the clues or hints in the poem and in the passage to help you identify similarities between the two sets of sisters, and also how one set of sisters is different than the other. Remember you're comparing the two sisters in the poem to the two sisters in the passage.
  • A graphic organizer might be helpful here. There are several examples on the TIPS page of this lesson.

Think:

  • What two key elements are needed for a full two-point answer?
    • Explanation of how the sisters in the poem are different from the sisters in "Laughter."
    • Explanation of how they are alike.
    • Use of at least a couple places in the text to show how I figured out my answer - proof of my answer.

Review the scoring criteria for a two point answer and then you'll have a chance to write.
