 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples: 1 | 2 | 3 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 > Self Check

Practice 1:

Now it's your turn to put all the tips and tools together and show you know:

  • how to make connections between two different texts by
    • analyzing comparisons or contrasts in two different texts
    • or cause / effect situations in two different texts!

Instruction:

Since we're on the subject how family members connect with each other, let's see how two adults remember their childhood experiences with their father. Read "The Secret Heart," by Robert P. Tristram Coffin, and "Those Winter Sundays," by Robert Hayden.

They are linked to the book icons on the right. Check out the question you will be answering to jump-start your brain to look for connections as you read. This gives your reading a purpose and activates your brain cells!

The Secret Heart

Those Winter Sundays

Question:

Which statement is true of both poems?

While Reading:

  • Try to imagine the feelings of each son for his father.
  • Think about the question you will be answering.

Try this strategy:

Remember one false eliminates the answer choice. Tackle these answer choices like this:

  1. Read the answer choice.
  2. Figure out if it is true for one poem by identifying the lines in the poem that make the statement true.
  3. If it isn't true, you can eliminate the answer.
  4. If it is true, check the other poem and figure out the evidence in the poem that says it's true.
  5. If it's true in both, it's your answer!
  6. Follow this process with each answer to be sure you've chosen the best answer.
