 Objectives/Vocab/Tips > Examples: 1 | 2 | 3 > Practice: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 > Self Check

Practice 2 - Instruction:

"Mama Is a Sunrise" and "Hairs" are both a child's tribute to mom. You might recognize characteristics of someone special in your life while reading these selections. You might even be inspired to write your own poem. See if you find other connections between the two texts. They are both linked to the book icons below.

Before Reading:

Read the prompt you will be answering, so that there is a place in your brain to file away ideas as you read! You might want to quickly review figures of speech from Lesson 5 too.

Short Answer Prompt:

  1. Complete the chart below comparing figurative language in the poem "Mama Is a Sunrise" and the passage "Hairs."
    • List 2 different literary elements (simile, metaphor, or personification) used in the poem.
    • List 2 different literary elements used in the passage "Hairs."
    • Tell what objects or ideas are being compared or personified.
