Practice 5:

Instruction:

A similar topic quickly rises to the surface in both the essay, "Green Gulch," and the poem "My Parents." The young speakers describe a horrible discovery about life they make as children.

You might also make some connections in your own mind to recent articles in the news, on TV, in magazines, or even in classroom discussions about bullies.

Do the speakers in these passages relay a truth about children and about life that is also accurate today or do their discoveries relate only to their lives?

Green Gulch

My Parents

Both passages are linked to the book icons on the right. Check out the question you will be answering to jump-start your brain to look for connections as you read. This gives your reading a purpose and activates your brain cells!

Before Reading:

  • The question you will be answering relates to theme or message, and requires you to think about connections between the passages. You might want to review Lesson 6 Tips.
  • Skim over the question before reading. This will start the brain cells working to recognize the connections in the poem and essay as you read.
  • Remind yourself to always always, always refer to the text to find proof or evidence for the answer you choose.

Continue on!

Question:

Which sentence states a theme or message found in the poem and in the story?

Yes No Maybe   Answer
A. Children in groups can be cruel to outsiders, those alone, younger, weaker, or different than themselves.
B. If other children beat you up, or attack you, or treat you with cruelty, you can't tell adults because they don't understand that children can be so mean.
C. Parents warn children not to go off on their own because they know that children can be cruel to others who are by themselves.
D. Children should not be allowed to play in groups because they always turn cruel towards outsiders.

How did you do? You probably had the explanations all figured out and could have written them yourself! Good work. Time to review your learning!
