For the last decade, we've connected K-12 students with WA State certified teachers in a one-on-one, fully-accredited learning environment. When we say, "For every raised hand, an answer," we mean it!
Washington's first online public school.
Whether you're down the street in a Federal Way school or across the state, you can excel in our individualized, one-on-one environment in Washington's first online public school. All it takes is a web connection, a computer, self-management skills, and drive to learn.
While many of our students reside in Federal Way, we've had students enroll from other cities, states, and even countries. Many of our students travel to competitions while still attending a rigorous, standards-based school. Other students augment their home school curriculum with our courses. Regardless of why they come, our students enjoy a flexible and challenging learning experience through IA.
Ideal for students participating in band, drama, or other time-intensive school activities, IA can free space in the school schedule.
Additionally, by enrolling in summer school, you can make up credits or get a jump on the coming year.
Our Course Catalog offers courses from primary through secondary. With new courses coming online each term, we continue to expand our offerings to meet student needs with many courses available, such as Credit Retrieval.
It's a simple process. We have open enrollment for the regular school year starting in August and closing in March. Enrollment for our 6-week summer program takes place beginning mid-May.

* Credit Retrieval (CR) Course Requirements:
- Student must provide a school transcript showing the course has been taken, a grade received, but no credit earned. The student will not be placed in their CR course until a transcript has be recieved.
- If the student demonstrates mastery of the standards throughout the course, a final grade of C will be recorded and .5 credit earned.
- If the student desires a grade greater than a C, the student will need to take the regular semester course.
- The student will complete a diagnostic tool for assessment of previous understanding of the standards. The teacher will build a learning plan around the assessment for the student to follow.
- A credit retrieval course must be finished in the summer session.
- Courses require a nonrefundable tuition fee of $205 per semester course.

Planning for High School and Beyond
What do you want to do after you graduate? Choosing the right courses during high school can give students a competitive edge in the post-high school world.
Throughout a students time in high school, students will collect a variety of examples of their work that will be used to demonstrate their learning. This culminating project creates a Master Portfolio for each student that they will use as they build their resume for college and careers.
Declaration of Intent to Graduate through iA
Current, full-time students, with at least junior level standing (11.5 credits) may declare their intent to graduate through iA by initiating a request through our Contact page.
Offered during the regular school year and summer session
Credit Retrieval courses are for students who have already taken a particular course and not earned credit. A diagnostic assessment, given at the beginning of the course, will help indicate what standards the student has previously met, and what skills still need to be practiced and demonstrated. Based on the results of the diagnostic assessment, a Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP) for meeting standards will be developed by the teacher and then communicated to the student. Upon successful completion of the course, the student earns a passing grade (C) and .5 credit in the given course.
Credit Retrieval courses have been designed to be completed within a 6-week session period. Students should plan on spending 90-120 minutes per school day (or approximately 45 total hours) to complete the course within six (6) weeks.
However, we realize that due to student skills, time-consuming regular school work, and other activities, some students may not be able to finish the course within the 6-week designed session. During the regular school year we encourage all students to formulate a plan to complete the course within six (6) weeks. However, we do allow students up to a maximum of twelve (12) weeks to complete the course. All summer credit retrieval sessions are limited to 6 weeks.
Enrollment for Credit Retrieval courses begins one week after regular school starts. For specific dates, please refer to our frequently updated Academic Calendar. Students must have all required forms turned into the IA offices including verification of previously taking the course they want to retrieve. Full payment must also be made prior to the student starting the course.
Summer 2013: Students may sign up during our regular summer session enrollment window during the month of June.
Cost: Credit retrieval courses are offered for tuition of $205.00 per course. All tuition is non-refundable.
In iA's decade of online experience, we have seen a growing number of families choose to home school their children. While many of these families have taken courses with us, others choose to home school independently. Regardless of your choice, helpful information and resources await you below.
We provide this because we believe that Washington's children—those learning at home, those learning in public school, and those learning online—deserve a first-rate education and we take pride in our ten years of augmenting homeschooling for our families
There are multiple laws that impact how homeschool families homeschool their children. The following laws reference specifically or in part information about providing Home-Based Instruction:

In August 2005 the rules governing Alternative Learning, WAC 392.121.182, were modified to include Digital Learning Programs such as the Internet Academy. There are multiple entries within this revised law referring to homeschool students, emphasis added:
(1)(a) Individual courses of study for students who meet the definition for enrollment specified by WAC 392-121-106. Students may enroll part-time in alternative learning experiences. Such enrollment shall be subject to the provisions of RCW 28A.150.350 and chapter 392-134 WAC;
(3)(e) A school district that provides one or more alternative learning experiences to a student shall provide the parent(s) or guardian of the student, prior to the student's enrollment, with a description of the difference between home-based instruction pursuant to chapter 28A.200 RCW and the enrollment option selected by the student. The parent or guardian shall sign documentation attesting to his or her understanding of the difference and the documentation shall be retained by the district and made available for audit.
(6)(b) The educational progress of students enrolled in alternative learning experiences shall be assessed at least annually, using, for full-time students, the state assessment for the student's grade level and using any other annual assessments required by the school district. Part-time students shall also be assessed at least annually. However, part-time students who are either receiving home-based instruction under chapter 28A.200 RCW or who are enrolled in an approved private school under chapter 28A.195 RCW are not required to participate in the assessments required under chapter 28A.655 RCW.

Washington Homeschool Organization (WHO) - The Washington Homeschool Organization (WHO) is a statewide, non-profit membership organization. Its mission is to serve the diverse interests of home-based education in Washington State.

Any student residing out side of Washington state may take Internet Academy classes as long as he or she is between the ages of 6 and 21 years. However, since the student is not currently a resident of Washington State the student must pay a fee for each class. The tuition fee currently charged is $345 per semester class. A student is given 90 school days to complete high school class credits and all classes are designed to be completed by a student working about 5-7 hours per week.
Although no attendance is taken for our tuition students, our teachers will communicate to parent/guardian regarding the student's progress within each class. In addition we offer an electronic progress reports via our web site at the 9-week point of the semester. Both the student and the parent are given login information to be able to view these reports.
Our program is accredited through the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS) .

Learning Expectations Student:
- Students need a computer meeting system requirements as posted online, and daily Internet access. Students most often work at home and should set up an environment and daily schedule conducive to learning.
- Students are expected to communicate with teachers and complete assignments as part of their learning day.
- Successful secondary students schedule 60-90 minutes per day, per course to study and complete assignments. Elementary classes require a 5-8 hour weekly commitment. Students are expected to work consistently toward completion of their courses. Credit is earned by completing the course. Partial credit will not be given.
- Computers do crash or experience technical problems. Student's work still needs to be completed on a consistent weekly basis. The student is responsible to locate another computer with Internet access until their own is repaired. Suggestions: local library, friend’s home, or parent’s work. Students should save all assignments to an external drive.
- Self-motivated education means the major responsibility belongs to the student to stay on target with course assignments. Teachers offer guidance, instruction, and feedback. Schedules and checklists are posted online.
Learning Expectations Parent:
- Learning online is a Student – Parent – Teacher partnership. Parent involvement increases student success. When parents stay involved in making schedules, familiarizing themselves with course material, assignments and grades, and communicate with teachers, students have a high degree of success.
- Parents are provided an Insight Account. The Insight account gives the parent access to their student's grades, log data, course content, and internal communication system to communicate with the assigned teacher. An email will be sent to the parent's email with the UserID and Password to the Insight account.
- Each student is provided access to our iA Campus (Angel, LMS). This system provides the student access to the course content and other important tools that aid in submission of work and of obtaining feedback from their assigned iA teachers.
- Within 24 hours of receipt of the Welcome letter, students must successfully complete an Online Orientation and Orientation Assignment. After completing and submitting the Orientation Assignment, student will be assigned teachers, and student will begin working in courses immediately.
- It is the responsibility of the student and parent to contact Internet Academy immediately for assistance with any problems getting started . For technical help, please call (253) 945-2249, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Credit and Grading:
- Confirmation that iA courses meet a student's graduation requirements is the responsibility of the student and parent. Please check with your school counselor. iA is accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC).
- Credit for courses is earned when all course work is completed to meet State and District expectations.
- Grades on assignments must be at passing level. Revisions may be required to meet learning expectations. FWPS students must meet C- grade expectations to earn credit. Partial credit for a course will not be issued.
- All secondary courses earn .5 credit and should be completed within one semester (18 weeks).
- Course grades are posted online and are current within a one week period. Teachers will provide parents additional progress information when requested. Progress Reports will be e-mailed mid-semester.
- Intentional deception (copying, plagiarism, cheating, etc.) in the preparation or completion of any school assignment, examination or project, or aiding such behavior by others, is prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.
- Upon completion of courses, final grades issued will be A, B, C, D, or F. If a student withdraws after the nine week Drop period, an F will be recorded as a final grade.
- Students residing in Washington state are required to attend school (RCW28A.225). Internet Academy students are required to “attend” class, just like students in a building school setting. Attendance is defined as WEEKLY assignment completion and contact with teachers.
- Students absent for a period of 20 consecutive school days, defined as no assignments submitted, will be withdrawn from course(s), or from the program, with grade(s) earned at that time.
- When a withdraw occurs at Internet Academy, students must enroll in their resident building school, or other educational program (does not apply if Intent to Provide Home-based Instruction has been filed).
- According to WAC 392-121-182 our teachers are required to monitor Satisfactory Progress on a monthly basis.
- Teachers will report on the last Monday of the month unless the Monday falls three days or less from the actual last day of month which means the report will be completed on the next to last Monday of the month.
- All students must submit a minimum one assignment per week to earn a monthly grade of Satisfactory.
- Submitting less than one assignment per week will result in the student being marked Unsatisfactory.
- All students earning a UP will receive an automated call from our phone system notifying the parent that the student did receive one or more Unsatisfactory Progress marks. This call will be followed up by a report in the mail.
- Two consecutive months of making Unsatisfactory Progress could result in the student being dropped from the course or even a withdrawal from our program.
- If a withdraw occurs at Internet Academy, students must enroll in their resident building school, or other educational program (does not apply if Intent to Provide Home-based Instruction has been filed).
- Completed assignments are required for EACH CLASS, EACH WEEK. Some courses require class chats, projects, portfolios, presentations, or in-person assessments.
- Students are required to use their assigned Angel LMS account to submit all required work and to communicate with their assigned iA teacher.
- It is the student's responsibility to SAVE assignments as a back up and to be sure assignments are submitted through the appropriate tools within our Angel system.
- For specific assistance, students should contact their teacher. Appointments can be made to come in during teacher office hours.
- Teachers' first responsibility is to work with active, working students. Time permitting, contact will be made with parents of non-working students.
- Secondary courses earn .5 credit per semester, and need to be completed by semester dates for students to stay on track for graduation. Elementary students also should work consistently toward semester course completion. Suggested schedules for assignment completion called the Checklist are posted within each course. All Apex courses use the Apex Calendar in place of our Checklist.
- At the end of the semester, a final grade (A,B,C,D,F) will be issued in grades K-8. High school students may work past the traditional semester and even take two full semesters to complete a course provided the student meets all weekly requirements. However, it is important for students to complete courses in the more traditional semester time frame or quicker in order to stay on pace for graduation. Not completing all the required work may result in failing a course.
- If tuition is paid for a course, the student will have 18 weeks to complete the course, or until the end of school, whichever comes first.
Request for Withdrawal/Dropping a Course:
Students may officially withdraw from our program or drop a course within the FIRST NINE WEEKS of admission without grade penalty. Requests for withdrawal or dropping a course must be made by parent/guardian. Please contact Debbie Andrus, Student Data Manager at (253) 945-5807, or email@example.com.
Teacher information (phone, e-mail, course schedules) is available through the student's iA Campus account and the parent's Insight account. In addition all iA teachers contact information is available through our website through the 'Contact Us' menu. The most efficient way to contact an iA teacher is via email.
To Resolve Concerns:
First, contact the student's teacher. Next, use the 'Contact Us' menu. You will receive a contact within 24 hours.
Transcripts and/or Internet Academy Course Reports will be mailed home at the end of the school year. Additional Transcript mailing, such as a copy to your resident building school, or other educational program, may be requested at any time by completing the Transcript Request form by using the link found at the Internet Academy Home Page, or calling (253) 945-5807.
Special Educaton and 504 Plans
If a student has qualified for and/or received Special Education or 504 services during the past 12 months, the student application is referred to the Director of Student Support Services who will contact the student's case manager.
The application process involves the student's case manager and IEP team and could take additional time. This process is followed for all students with special needs to ensure appropriate placement. The student's resident school retains management of the special education services. Internet Academy works with the resident school to offer appropriate general education courses. An IEP team meets to review the courses requested, disability area, PLP, special education and related services, appropriateness of the placement, and accommodations required by the student. If the IEP team determines the placement at Internet Academy is appropriate for general education courses, and does not alter the nature of the Internet Academy program, the student is admitted to Internet Academy for general ed courses. The case manager retains responsibility for special education.
If admitted, a WELCOME letter is e-mailed to the student and parent regarding User ID and Password, Online Orientation, and Orientation Assignment. The Online Orientation must be completed within 48 hours to remain enrolled. Upon completion of the Orientation Assignment, the student is assigned teachers and is expected to start class immediately.
Communication between the case manager and Internet Academy teachers remains open while the student attends Internet Academy. Students are expected to meet Internet Academy attendance policy and grade level course expectations.
|Federal Way Public Schools policies and procedures provide all students with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in the Internet Academy. They provide that a student with a disability will not be excluded from the program, except where careful consideration has been given to the services, modifications, or adjustments necessary for such a student to participate, and where it has been determined that such services or modification would fundamentally alter the nature of the program.|
